Restore Icon Images

When viewing a list of files in Windows Explorer, all my files with a .ico
or .cur extention displays an icon of the program associated with that
extention.
Is there a way to restore the association that the icon / cursur self
displays instead of the associated program's icon?

I removed the association, but now Windows just displays the default icon
used for unknown file types.

You must go in "Folder Option" from "tools" frm file explorer

pick the extention you want and remove the program associated with ! it
should be very simple to do
