Icon Association

I recently installed Nero 9 for burning CD/DVDs. It's taken over the
association of all icons in an icon folder I have. When I open the
folder in Explorer I no longer see the icon itself in the "List" view,
but a sort of "unknown" icon. Is there a way I can get the proper
association back so that the file icon shows the actual icon?

Hello ohsix, yes you can by right clicking the file and associating the file with
the application you want. Unfortunately Nero9 intrenches itself on all multimedia
file types after it installs. This can become quite a task. I have sent a support
email to Nero regarding this and many other issues that Nero9 causes after it
installs. I'll mark this Newspost and respond again when Nero gets back to me. To
give you an idea, I emailed them quite a while ago, so don't hold your breath.

My advise, if you do not have a BluRay burner, or HD-DVD, go back to Nero6, even
7. There are many disappointed with Nero9, just google it.

WindPipe: The problem with your right-click suggestion is that I have no idea
what application I should select to make the icons appear as the file icon. I
do see the icon in the "Detail" section in the left Explorer column when I
click on (select) an icon file.

Alan: I think if I started messing around in the registry I'd really screw
things up - don't want to do that myself.

It's actually very easy.

1. Open the Registry Editor and select the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key.

2. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+F to open the find window.

3. Enter .bak (that is period and bak)

4. Un-tick all boxes, except Value and go.

5. Look for the Nero association that you wish to restore, like
"PhotoSnapViewer.bak" or "ShowTime.bak" and copy and
paste its data to the default, like this:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avs]
Default = NeroShowTime.Files8.avs
ShowTime.bak = avsfile

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avs]
Default = avsfile

I don't want Nero as the default for icons. I want whatever it used to be so
that in Explorer, when I open my icon folder each fine (xxxxx.ico) will have
whatever ican that file is as its icon. I guess my problemis I don't know
what to "associate" them with to do this or how to do this.

ohsix,

These are more typical associations for a standard install.

..wmv - Windows Media Player
..mpg - Windows Media Player
..mpeg - Windows Media Player
..mov - QuickTime Player if you have it, Windows Media Player if you have the
codec for it.
Or a Media Player to your liking, e.g. Winamp

..wma - Windows Media Player
..mp3 - Windows Media Player
..mp4 - Can leave this as Nero
Or a Media Player to your liking, e.g. Winamp

..jpg - Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer
..jpeg - Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer
..tiff - Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer
..png - Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer
..bmp - Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer
Or MS Office Picture Manager.

This version of Nero, being Nero 9, no longer presents you with the option of
associating particular multimedia files to the Nero application, or leaving the
setting for the file as is. Instead it associates practically everyting to Nero.
Bad one on Nero's behalf.

I'm not sure if it's a question icon display for the file, or application
association you're asking. Take a look through Tools|Folder Options|File Types, in
Windows Explorer, you can chage the associations there. Also look in some of the
Nero associated files in Tools|Folder Options|File Types, click the Advanced
button, and tell me if you have; "ERROR: UNKNOWN RESOURCE ID" in the "Edit File
Type" prompt.

Oh, well that's easy to fix too:

1. Copy below and paste into Notepad.

----------copy inside only----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico]
@="icofile"
"PerceivedType"="image"
"Content Type"="image/x-icon"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile]
@="Icon"
"ImageOptionFlags"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\DefaultIcon]
@="%1"

----------copy inside only----------

2. Save-as ICO.reg (or any name + .reg)

3. Double-click or right-click and merge into the registry.
