Restore from NTBACKUP on CD-RW Failure

Gary Grathen

I'm getting the following error message when I try to restore a .BKF file
created with the NTBACKUP application on Windows XP Professional:

"The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used."

I have two diffferent backups on two different CDs, each getting the same
error message. The backups completed successfully with no indication of a
problem. However, after my hard drive crashed and I lost all the data (the
local computer repair shop could not recover the files), I got this error
message when I tried to run a "restore" on the new PC (IBM ThinkCentre A30).

If I can't perform a "restore", then all my data is lost. Is there any
method to recover the .BKF files? I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base
and didn't see any references to this particular problem.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Can you read a BKF file from the CD to the hard disk and see if
ntbackup can open it from the hard disk. Even if it's not practical to
actually restore, it will be a start toeards restoring your data, and
you can restore individual files, if that makes sense.

I gather you are trying to reatore on a machine other than the the
one you backed up ?

Thanks for the suggestion ... I tried copying the .BKF file to my new hard
drive, however I got the following error message:

Error copying file or folder
Cannot copy BACKUP: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Please let me know if anyone can offer additional assistance.

Thanks.

Does the CD drive on you new computer read anything else ?

Can you copy the BKF media to the hard drive on your old machine ?

Did you select the "verify" option when you did the backup.

have you ever tested yoru backups ?

Does the CD drive on you new computer read anything else ? YES

Can you copy the BKF media to the hard drive on your old machine ? NO ...
GET CRC ERROR

Did you select the "verify" option when you did the backup. YES

have you ever tested yoru backups ? NO, THE BACKUP COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY
SO I ASSUMED IT WAS GOOD (WHICH WAS A BAD ASSUMPTION, APPARENTLY :-(

Thanks for your help.
