NTBACKUP on XP Fails to Restore .BKF File from CD

Guest

I'm getting the following error message when I try to restore a .BKF file created on a CD with the NTBACKUP application on Windows XP Professional:

"Unrecognized media
The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used."

I have two diffferent backups on two different CDs, each getting the same
error message. The backups completed successfully with no indication of a
problem.

My old hard drive crashed and I lost all the data (the local computer repair shop could not recover the files). I get the above error message when I run the "restore files" function from the Windows XP NTBACKUP application.

I tried to copy the .BKF file on the CD to my new hard drive and got this error message:

"Error copying file or folder
Cannot copy BACKUP: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"

Since the NTBACKUP backups completed successfully, I made the assumption (which was wrong, apparently), that the "restore" function would also be successful.

If I can't restore the two backup files on these two CDs, I will lose all my data, which is a very painful prospect. If anyone has any idea on how to restore the .BKF file or how to copy it to a hard drive (getting around the CRC error), please advise.

Thanks much.

I don't know if this will help in your situation but you might try the
Orilogix trailware version of Backup MyPC 4.85 which is fully functional for
30 days. The NTBackup program is based on this app which was originally
developed by Veritas.

(This version is not to be confused with the Backup MyPC trailware that is
distributed by Stompinc)

I presume that you copied the .bkf file from HDD to the CD. So copy the ..bkf file back to your HDD and run it from there. You might want to read this article: Windows Backup Does Not Back Up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R Devices http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315255 HTH

Thanks, however I burned the backup directly to CD, so it appears I'm out of
luck.

I tried to restore from Backup MyPC, but that also failed.

Thanks anyway.
