ntbackup ntuser and bkf

Hi

My computer came with windowsxp home, but without the disk.

When I tried to back up everyone's documents and settings (by simply copying
and pasting) it told me I first had to turn off whatever was using ntuser. So
far my reading suggests that I can't while signed on to do the backup. Please
advise if I am mistaken.

So I followed advice in this forum and downloaded
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

It appears to have successfully done something, except the file it created
appears to be a single .bkf file.

I would prefer to have the back up be the files I am used to, such as .doc
and .dbx files.

Is there a way I can do this?

Use a different backup program. Apparently you are trying to use the
built-in NTBackup, which is very old and was designed for NT systems
using tape drives. Acronis True Image is a good program and provides the
ability to image your system as well as to do incremental backups.
Second Copy (www.centered.com) is an excellent backup program (doesn't
do imaging).

Not sure I understand, Malke. Maybe clarify? ntBackup is old and has
some faults, but it does allow you to backup / retrieve individual files or
folders at will and will do incrementals. While I understand pushing an
imaging prog, I think ntbackup is fully capable of what the OP wants. No?

Acronis True Image might be just what the OP is looking for. NTBackup is a
POS. In my opinion it should never have been included with this version of
Windows.

Each to their own opinions, certainly. I don't disagree either, except that
ntbackup is a perfectly functional and useful app, just without a lot of
bells & whistles. Well, actually none - but it works fine until one gets
into the imaging arena and realizes how much better they are.
IMO no OS should be distributed without a means of backup.
