Restore Backup after changing partition

D

Dick Watson

Env: WinXP SP2++, RAID 0 (Promise FastTrax 133 Lite) on two IDE drives, 3
partitions presently, System partition is bootable, etc., have **large**
external disk on USB2.

Goal: three partitions on RAID 0 array are misshapen. Want to enlarge the
first one, retain the second, and eliminate the third. Considering being too
cheap to buy Partition Magic for ten minutes use.

Issue: ASR Wizard restores partition information. All my googling finds no
way to edit this in the backup prior to the restore.

Question: Will I get a workable restored system (with different partition
sizes) if I

- use NTBACKUP to backup all of the current system partition with System
State/Automatically backup System Protected Files options and, separately,
the second partition to backup files on the external USB drive,

- repartition and reinstall base XP--just enough to get an administrator
account that can get at the external drive with NTBACKUP,

- reinstall SP2,

- then restore all contents from each of the backups?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Dick,

in theory, yes. Ideally you want to back up and restore your
working partition while running a Windows installation in
another partition.
