Restart/Shutdown no longer work

When I hit (Start - Shutdown) I get the menu and usually pick (Resart), but
all that happens is that the dialog box goes away and the computer does not
restart. I've run SFC and am about to do an 'upgrade' reinstalltion unless
I can find another solution. I'd hate to have to take the time to reinstall
so any advice would be taken with much gratitude.

You didn't say so I'll ask...

You ARE giving it enough time to restart, aren't you? It takes several
seconds - sometimes minutes - to put away all the open files and take care
of the other necessary housekeeping. It's NOT instantaneous.

problems? Have a look at:

Reinstalling might help, but I doubt it. I think you'd just be spinning
your wheels.
