Request opinions on XP

I wish to change from 98SE to XP since 98SE is no longer supported. I will be setting up in a dual boot config. (Linux Suse / Win XP) an would like opinions as to wheather the XP os is best for this use. So far I have received several good reports for this combination. I have a broadband internet connection. My goal is to eventually use Linux exclusively but the cost of upgrading to Linux compatable applications such as AutoCad, Maple and advanced scientific software is not in my current budget. I plan to use XP only for these special applications and use Linux for "open office" applications, email and web browsing. I have no use for networking or anything related to "enterprise" applications

I would greatly appreciate any comments or opinions

I've had XP since it's release 2-1\2 yrs ago. With the SP2 XP has become even more secure. The problem with this question is it's hard to know what you have for equipment. XP is memory hungry so I highly recommend at least 512MB of RAM, a 64MB video card, a 1Ghz processor, a 40Gig HDD and that's just a start. The one thing about XP is that it's very easy to tweak and registry changes to improve performance can be found any where, depending on what you are doing with your system. I should caution you. I do not recommend upgrading but rather doing a clean install. Buy the full retail disk and format your drive and then install XP with the NTFS. XP PRO= more security, more tools and more ability to alter configurations. XP HE= cheaper, good for a home stand alone or even a small home network, easily upgraded to PRO. In short I love XP and have now tweaked over 150 registry settings to customize it for my own personal use. Good luck. {:~)

In addition to the great advice already given by TUP:

I had kept Win98SE as a dual boot for a great while and then added it via
VPC for when needed while working the Win98 groups, while running the XP
beta and afterwards.

Stick with Win 98SE for now.. the amount of cash that you will need to
purchase XP and the parts for your present computer such that XP will run
reasonably well would be better kept and used to get the Linux apps that you
want.. it is also possible that your present 'Windows' apps may not work in
XP.. now that would be a bummer, wouldn't it.. all of that money spent on XP
and hardware upgrades just to find that none of it works.. what then of your
supercilious goal of 'using Linux exclusively'?..

This is an XP newsgroup, not a Linux newsgroup.. I am sure that if you were
to ask in the Linux forums, they would be only too pleased to tell you what
'POS MS OS' is best to use..

Not all Linux users have that terrible of an opinion of Windows and not
all Windows users have a terrible opinion of Linux either. Some of us
use both for different purposes. Your comment is just as bigoted as
those you complain about. Computing is not a competition sport.

I usually stay out of these types of threads, but I've had a lot of
coffee this morning so I'll give the original poster a classic Linux
*and* Windows geek answer: try it and see what happens! Oh, and btw I
currently have boxen running DOS, Win95, Win98SE, WinXP Pro, Win2k Pro,
Mac OS 10.2 and SuSE 9.0 Pro, with one laptop dual booting XP Pro and
SuSE 9.0. All boxen have their specialities and purposes.

LOL! What an ass! You gave fine answers to his questions, then out of the blue
adopted a 'holier-than-thou' attitude! You couldn't have shown yourself to be a
sheep and an ass kisser any better! LOL! He asked perfectly reasonable
questions pertaining to XPee, you moron. You should have stuck to just
answering instead of letting your sheep mind take over when you saw the word
