Replacement newgroup

FWIW, I joined the following group:

eternal-september.support

as a replacement for the dwindling current 'basics'
group, and find it active and helpful.

Which has nothing to do with the topic of THIS newsgroup. This
newsgroup discusses Microsoft's Windows XP product family. That
newsgroup would be about getting help with the ES service itself and has
nothing to do with Microsoft or Windows XP; however, you are *still*
posting using Microsoft's NNTP server so what ES has to do with your
post is unknown.

With Microsoft dropping their NNTP server, you think it wise to
subscribe to a newsgroup that discusses some other newsgroups provider's
service? How are you going to get to the ES newsgroup when Microsoft
drops their NNTP server? What does the ES newsgroup have to do with
Windows XP?

To reply briefly, I quote a query I posted there, which I would
have posted here, and received several useful responses. And
as far as I can make out, I don't think I'm on any server that
is dependent upon Microsoft.

Even though people may post on MS newsgroups through other NNTP servers, it
doesn't change the fact that most of the experts and regular posters are
gone! And, before long, the diehards will give up. Traffic is just about
nill, you HoopleHead.

Sticks and stones......

But if you go to the group that I went to, on
recommendations received here, you'll find Microsoft
MVPs pitching in there, as they used to do here.

....and the likes of you are precisely why MS is discontinuing the public newsgroups. So
thanks loads for contributing to the death of what used to be very useful newsgroups.

Usenet and supporting people was around long before MS found the
internet let alone Usenet, it will continue just fine. The good news is
that we'll see a dramatic decrease in BS posts and people that add
insults to the end of their posts.

With a good kill-file, newsgroups could still work. Not sure why M$ is
killing their server but other servers will carry the M$ newsgroups if
anybody has any new questions.

It's about CONTROL and MS had no control of Usenet without a LOT of work
on their part and then only their servers.

BTW, I was led to an eternal-september group, where I wasn't exactly
welcomed. I could use a referral from here to an established group maybe
more pointedly XP-interested.

Not sure why????????? How about cost?

You apparently get your jollies off calling others HoopleHead. It's a
reflection of your personality.
How many friends do you have? One? two?

You're here. This is it.

He must not understand it's just a portal to the MS NNTP newsgroups, which
no longer exist, and the people have/are migrating to the MS web based
forums.

If you're using a real Usenet service then you can keep using these
microsoft.public groups, there is no better Usenet group for XP.

Eternal-September is part of that FREE groups - and you get what you pay
for.

Actually you don't.

Many ISPs have stopped providing newsgroups, but have not reduced their
subscriptions accordingly. So you still pay for it, but don't get it, unless
you join a free news server like eternal-september.

Actually, you will find that they never specifically stated you would
keep Usenet forever - they can change their contracts any time.

That is Microsoft's NNTP server value. You are still posting through
Microsoft's server.

Path:...!TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl

The first node (rightmost one as each peering node gets prepended in
this list) shows the host from which the post originated; i.e., to where
you posted. Again, that's Microsoft's NNTP server.

You are NOT posting here using the NNTP server from Eternal-September.
Did you even define a news account in OE for their NNTP server?

Usenet has been around for 30 years. Microsoft tried to usurp Usenet
back in 2006 and now they are leaving.
