Replacement for NAV 2004

S

Steve H

To All:

My subscription for NAV 2004 is up for renewal in a month. I am ready to
dump NAV 2004 and I am looking for a suggestions for replacement.

First a few comments.

1) NAV 2002 was OK. It caught all viruses on my PC and was NOT a
memory pig.

2) NAV 2004 in NOT OK. It caught all viruses on my and IS a MAJOR
memory pig.

3) Before NAV for about 3 years, I used CA'S Inoculate which later
became their EZ antivirus. It caught almost all viruses and was NOT a
memory pig.

4) In-coming email scanning is nice but out-going is totally unnecessary.

5) I use: Firefox, Thunderbird, Adaware SE, Spybot S&D, SpywareBaster,
and a hosts file.

6) I am OK with paying for my AV. I want something that protects as
well as NAV, but is NOT a memory pig.

What are some good comparison websites for AV's?

What do people recommend?

Thanks,

Steve

You will probably like NOD32. Does all of the thing NAV did/does with a
much smaller footprint and resource usage. Updates download very fast
and it's easy to configure.

Hi Steve,

I'm running Norton Security Suite 2004 and I'm not finding any problems with
slow downs.

Macafee did slow my PC down and I won't use it again.

Why not a Trial of Pccillin.

Cheers

David.

Say no to Underware on your PC.

Uninstall all of the BAVs you have, and re-install NAV 2002.
Select mail-in registration if prompted, and toss the printout.
Disable automatic update, live update.
Manually log to
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html
and download the"intelligent" updater whenever you want, and apply it.
When the 1-year freebie gets near the end, un-install and re-install
as mentioned. You now have another free year.

Steve H,

For a very good AV program, which is extremely light on resource usage, try
Nod32. I have used several AV programs including, but not limited to;
Norton/Symantec, McAfee, Kaspersky, AVG, Norman (yes, that's the name), and
of them all Nod32 ranks at the top.

Robert,

Your advice to replace Norton with Norton is interesting, but I don't think
that's what the OP intended.

Yes. Make sure you search for and delete all subdirectories with the
names "symantec" and "norton" in the name before you install NAV 2002.
Select mail-in registration if prompted, and toss the printout.

Hit the "skip" button when prompted about registration.
Disable automatic update, live update. Manually log to...

While I also disable the auto update, I hit the "live update" button
from within the program when-ever I feel like it's time to update my
def files. It's quick and easy and it's as current as you're going to
need it to be.
When the 1-year freebie gets near the end, un-install and
re-install as mentioned. You now have another free year.

Yes, that too.

Did you read me question? Besides the sig updates for 2002 are VERY out
dated.

...and you still have a three-year (four?) old engine. There have been
enough significant updates in both virus and anti-virus techniques in
the last three years, I would not want to use a product so old.

For the OP, I'd recommend the free Avast anti-virus application. Works
very well, and is highly recommended by all here who have found it.

http://avast.com/eng/down_home.html It's free, but you need to
register it every 14 month. They've never spammed me.

I use eTrust-works well for me. Seems to me that you have educated
yourself about using "safe-hex" which is the most important thing.
Along with the other programs you mentioned I use
MSAntiSpyware,PestPatrol(included with eTrust suite),Script Sentry and
Script Defender.
About your hosts file,if it is over 135kb it will slow down your browser
unless DNS Client has been disabled.
One other thing-I have read that traces of Norton are hard to get rid of
after a uninstall.(I have never used it)
I have written some pages to help you keep your system clean.

No they aren't.

If you were to install NAV 2002 today, and then do your first
live-update, you'd be downloading about 10.4 mb of files. 4 of them
pertaining to the anti-virus engine (so yes you'd have a more updated
engine than the name of the product would suggest).

I just ran the live-update component of my NAV 2002 installation and
obtained a set of definition files dated June 15 (2005).

No, they're not. I still get regular sig updates for NAV 2002.

Could you comment a bit more about the latest eTrust. As I said, I used
the older version of that for a few years.

Thanks,

The version I use is the suite,7.0.6.7 which includes PestPatrol, spam
filter and firewall. RoadRunner provides it free for their users. Here
are the memory figures(w2k)-
CAVTray 4,896k
CAVRid 3,052k
VETMsg 2,884
iSafe 8,576
QOELoader 1,252

I was using Avast and now my system seems faster using eTrust. The
interface is simple to change settings but I do not see a boot-time scan
option. The firewall looks like ZoneAlarmPro with its cookie control and
attachment blocker.

Thanks for the info. I just need the AV as I am already using ZA and a
hardware firewall and I'm already covered with other tools when it comes
to Pest Patrol.

Does eTrust do inbound email screening? The old CA Inoculate AV did not.

Does eTrust do auto updates? The old CA Inoculate AV did not.

Thanks,

Steve

Yes on both counts, you can auto-update every hour if you want. Inbound
works on Thunderbird also(it's what I use).

Steve, if you already are using the free ZoneAlarm firewall, then you
can update it to the ZoneAlarm with AntiVirus (which contains eTrust)
for free:

http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/promotions/zaav/04050.html?AID=10391233&PID=1423285

Complete the online upgrade to ZA AntiVirus, then send in the rebate.
This is the integrated ZA with AV. I have this combo on a laptop.

Yes, it does inbound email scanning
Yes, it does auto updates.

Or (as posted earlier) get the stand-alone eTrust.

(P.S. I am not associated in any way with ZA, ca.com or eTrust)
