Replace HD, fdisk,format

J

Jan C.

I have replaced a defective drive on a WIn2K PC with a
used hard drive from a Win98 PC and am attempting to re-
install windows 2000. Under win98 I would boot from a
floppy, run fdisk to delete and re-create the primary dos
partition, then format to format the drive. The W2K
recovery console diskpart doesn't appear to offer as many
options as 98, so how do I delete existing partitions and
re-create one new large partition? Also, attempting to
format gives an error looking for path for autofmt.exe.
Does this pgm not reside on the win2k boot floppies? Where
is the program?
Also under win98, I would copy /win98 folder from CD onto
the HD and install from HD so that the CD would no longer
need to be used. Can the same approach be used to install
Win2K? How?
Thanks in advance!

Boot from the Win 2k CD. It will give you the chance to delete, recreate,
and format partitions.

I believe it is the i386 directory you would copy from the Win 2k CD to hard
drive.

Jan,

You can do all your partition deleting and creating in the setup of
Windows 2000. Boot from the 2000 CD, choose to install and you will get
to a screen where you can delete any existing partitions and create new
ones. You gain nothing by trying to copy the CD to the hard drive first.
That will take a lot more time.
