Win2K "Error Loading Operating System" with 80GB ATA33

Here's the system: old hd failed in a system with Abit
BE6 (slot 1) motherboard. Replaced hd with WD800BB (80GB
ATA133 7200rpm). Using ATA33 IDE on motherboard (IDE1
connection) with hd as master and CD-Rom as slave on same
cable. No other drives in sys./ motherboard has ATA66
controller as IDE3 & IDE4--but due to problems in abit
forums noted by other users I'm not opening that can of
worms (Highpoint 366 ATA66 chip).

Problem: Tried installing NT 4.0 workstation and then
Win2K Pro (SP2) on system---both end up going through the
partitioning/formatting NTFS/copy files then reboot and
won't boot showing message--- NT4 shows "missing
operating system" / Win2K shows "Error loading Operating
system". I have tried various partition sizes 4GB, 7GB,
6GB, etc.--no change in behavior. I've tried
partitioning with updated fdisk/format for win98 and
works fine. I've issued 'fdisk /mbr' numerous times
between attempts with Win2k. I've tried loading new
ATAPI.SYS for NT4.0 Workstation.

Nothing is working!! I'm about to try the sledgehammer!

Any ideas/help? Thanks in advance,
Keir

Due to the initial partitioning and sizing issues associated with Windows NT
install to a large HD, it would have been better to install directly to Win2K.
We just updated a similarly looking system, a SuperMicro Slot-1, just this
way. The decision was made from the outset not to play around with setting
up Windows NT first, on the large HD.

Let me clarify...sorry.
Each attempt I've made to install, i've started from
scratch with no partitions defined (though just tried
again with NT4 with a 4GB DOS partition--still no good).
