Here's the system: old hd failed in a system with Abit
BE6 (slot 1) motherboard. Replaced hd with WD800BB (80GB
ATA133 7200rpm). Using ATA33 IDE on motherboard (IDE1
connection) with hd as master and CD-Rom as slave on same
cable. No other drives in sys./ motherboard has ATA66
controller as IDE3 & IDE4--but due to problems in abit
forums noted by other users I'm not opening that can of
worms (Highpoint 366 ATA66 chip).
Problem: Tried installing NT 4.0 workstation and then
Win2K Pro (SP2) on system---both end up going through the
partitioning/formatting NTFS/copy files then reboot and
won't boot showing message--- NT4 shows "missing
operating system" / Win2K shows "Error loading Operating
system". I have tried various partition sizes 4GB, 7GB,
6GB, etc.--no change in behavior. I've tried
partitioning with updated fdisk/format for win98 and
works fine. I've issued 'fdisk /mbr' numerous times
between attempts with Win2k. I've tried loading new
ATAPI.SYS for NT4.0 Workstation.
Nothing is working!! I'm about to try the sledgehammer!
Any ideas/help? Thanks in advance,
Keir
