Win2K install problem

T

Tim Ogiela

I have a system I'm on which I'm trying to install Win2K. I've gone through
the entire install process, with an NTFS file system, and it appears to
completely install correctly with no errors or appearant problems. When it
does a reboot after the install process, I get "error loading operating
system".

My motherboard is a Tyan Tiger 133, 1Ghz, dual Pentium III processors, 256
mb ram and 136 GB hard drive.

According to my Win2k manual and box, my system should meet the minimum
requirements to install and operate.

If I attempt a repair, it doesn't locate an operating system. I've even
tried to log onto the system for a manual repair and have no success in
locating the partation.

I have had other operating systems previously installed on this system and
it has worked fine. And I even low level formated the hard drive to ensure
there were no traces of any other os.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What happens when you boot the machine with a Win2000
boot disk? Here is how you can make one:
- Format a floppy disk on some other Win2000/XP PC.
Don't do it on a Win9x PC - it won't work.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your Win2000 CD to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

good advice.

if the drive is a standard IDE type then you should run the
manufacturer's diagnostic on it to see if has any problems.

if it checks out OK...i'd probably run a RAM test next

The system has a IDE motherboard controller.

I created a Windows 2000 boot disk as indicated and received the following
error message when attempting to boot from the boot disk,

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:
<Windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I ran a manufacturer's recertification test program on my Maxtor drive,
which resulted in no errors, just prior to a low level format and
installiation of Windows 2000.

I have not however run a ram test as yet.

Your next step should be to determine if you still have
a Windows installation on your disk. Try this:
1. Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk
from www.bootdisk.com.
2. Run ntfsdos.exe /L:MN (from www.sysinternals.com)

Now have a look on drive M:. Can you see the folder
M:\WinNT? Can you see the file M:\WinNT\system32\ntoskrnl.exe?

You should also try different numbers for partition(x)
in a:\boot.ini of the Win2000 boot disk you made previously.
Valid numbers are x=1, 2 or 3.

I'm sorry, I just overlooked that last test.

When I change the partation numbers in the boot.ini the error message reads:

Windows 2000 could not start because of a computer disk hardware
configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check
boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the Windows 2000 (TM) documentation about hardware disk

I suspect that you're trying to install Win2000 SP0 on a
partition that is too large for the OS to recognise properly.
See here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305098

I would never install Windows on a partition this size. It
makes little sense. Much better to install it on a 20 GByte
partition and leave the rest for data.

Ok, I repartitioned the boot partition (partation 1) to 20 Gig (no other
partations made as of yet), did a complete install and allowed it to format
the partation to NTFS.

After the install completed and the system restarted, I got the same result.
I get "error loading operating
system".

I restarted the system with the W2K install CD and went to Manual Recovery.
I can attach to partation 1 and accessed the WinNT directory. I changed
directory to System32 and verified ntoskrnl.exe exists.

I realize I negelected to mention that the install never completes. It's
after the initial format and basic W2K files install and restart the problem
exists. It will not restart to W2K to complete the setup/install and if I
boot back to the install CD it will only give me the option to install,
repair or reinstall.

I ran the W2K Boot Disk and again received the error - Windows 2000 could
not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
Windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
