Repeating text in Cells

Can anyone help me with this weird problem.

I am running Excel XP with XP prof.

I've got a spreadsheet I've been using for years, and just done some rather
drastic cut and paste to it.

However when I enter text which is roughly less than half the cell width,
the text is repeated to fill the remaining space in the cell.

It is on both the display and printout.

Anyone know what's happened?

Check the cell formatting. The horizontal alignment is probably set to
"Fill".
