Repeated Windows Product Activation

Why do I have to repeatedly do the Windows Product Activation each time I log
on? What can I do to fix this?

I recently downloaded Windows Service Pack 2 from the Automatic Update List
but after that, I've encountered this problem of repeated activation of the
Windows Product each time I log on.

Sounds like your wpa.dbl is messed up. Located in windows\system32. There is
wpa.bak located in the same directory. This is your Windows Product
Activation file which records Hardware Changes. Every 120 days it produces a
Hardware ID. I beleive you are allowed 7 hardware changes on a Desktop where
a NIC card will count as 3 during the 120 day period..

William,

If my wpa.dbl is messed up, what do I do then to fix it? Would you know?
By the way, thanks for the information.

Marta

Change the wpa.dbl to wpa.tmp then Change the wpa.bak file to wpa.dbl.

Hi again. Sorry, but I don't know were to start. Where do I go to change
the wpa.dbl to wpa.tmp, then again where do I go for the wpa.bak file to
wpa.dbl?

Thanks again William.

Marta

go to Start>Run and enter

%SystemRoot%\system32

you should find the files in there.

Yes, I found the files you mentioned. How do you change file name? I just
click on the file and it says there Properties, do I just type over it and
change the name of the file and that will fix it?

Yes, if this does not fix your problem.

You might have to do a repair installation of XP.

PMFBI, but since I have the same problem(I think) I have been reading this
thread. I cannot get XP Home to load at all except into safe mode because
it keeps asking to be activated after over a year of using. I tried your
fix, but I cannot find any wpa.bak file on either of my computers. The
wpa.dll file is there on both, but no .bak. I tried replacing the .dll file
on the bad system with the one from the good system, but that didn't work.
Any other suggestions before I have to reinstall?

Look in your registry by start>run and enter

regedit

go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and post your results, could be in the start up configuration.

Thanks William! I didn't have to do a windows product activation the last
time I logged on. It did solve the problem, i.e. the changing of file names,
etc. Thank you once again! God bless you.

Marta

You are welcome.

Look in your registry by start>run and enter

regedit

go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Has: Default Not Set
RoboForm C:\ "Path to RoboForm"
and

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Has: Default Not Set
Ad-watch C:\"Path" to LavaSoft
ccApp C:\"Path" to Symantec
EM_EXEC C:\"Path" to Logitech
Jet Detection C:\"Path" to Creative SB
NvCPIDaemon RUNDLL32.exe
SSC_userPrompt C:\"Path" to Symantec
TrayClip C:\"Path" to TrayClip
Upd Reg C:\Windows\UpdReg.EXE
WINDVDPatch CTHELPER.exe
zBrowser Launcher C:\"Path" to Logitech

With the exception of UpdReg, which is complete, the rest are just sumaries
of complete path. If you need the complete path, let me know. Thanks for
trying to help! I appreciate it.

Do not see anything significant. Have you looked in your Startup folder in
Start>All programs?

Looked in your msconfig also by

start>run and enter

msconfig

then go to the "Startup Tab"

Look for something that has "oobe/msoobe /a".

Have you performed a repair installtion of XP?

The following is quoted from Will Denny, a MS-MVP - Windows Shell/User

"If you want to perfrom a 'Repair' install of XP SP2, you will have to
create
an SP2 slipstreamed CD first:

You can download the SP2 file (266 MBs) from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en -
or if you have a copy of the SP2 CD, you can copy the xpsp2.exe file from
that CD onto your hard disk/partition and use that:

then follow the directions in the following article to create a slipstreamed
XP CD:

http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49

The following article by Michael Stevens will help you with a 'Repair'
install:

"How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install"
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

end quote.

If you do this, could you post back your result to ley me know if it worked.
Thanks.

I tried doing a "Repair", but don't think it did anything. ReBooted to
"F-8" and selected load last sucessful. It took about five minutes to load,
but appears to be working ok now. Am keeping my fingers crossed. Many
thanks for the help.

Sorry William. It's me again. Apparently, I have the same old problem of
repeated windows product activation. If I just log off, there's no need for
repeat activation but if I turn off the computer and would turn it on again,
then I would need to reactivate. It's alright if you don't know the
solution, I just wanted to inform you. Thanks again.

Have you tried running the following command by start>run and type

regsvr32 regwizc.dll
