Product Key Overuse

Neil

My problem is this:
It appears that I can only register my XP: Home Product Key a finite number
of times. Now, I've bought this copy of XP: Home and only used it on this one
PC.
The PC started to give problems and this resulted in it being formatted a
good many times. I repeatedly installed the XP: Home on it and
registered/activated it.

Now it tells me that "the number of times you can activate Windows with this
product key has been exceeded". How do I acquire a new product key to
activate my windows? I only have a couple of days left.

Hello,

Is your copy of XP a OEM version? OEM versions are tied to one PC and are
not transferable. Therefore you cannot purchase a second-hand OEM version of
Windows XP.

If it has been only installed and used on one PC, select the option to call
Microsoft to activate and you should be given a number to call. Call the
number, explain your situation and they will give you a code to activate XP.

There is no limitation on how many times you may activate (the message
you cite is misleading). In the event automatic activation cannot occur
over the Internet, simply follow the directions on the screen and
activate over the telephone.

In the future, post here before you reinstall Windows. It is hardly ever
needed. If you include a detailed description of your problem, we can
probably help you to solve it, and the solution most likely will not
involve performing a Clean Install!

Your first mistake was activating after the install, wait a bit to see if
it's stable. Second, if you continually format & reload and still have
issues, you need to seriously consider a hardware fault somewhere in your
system.

You don't need to get a new product key, you need to call the toll-free
number for activation.

There is no limit on how many times you can activate a single system using a
single key.

What does happen is that *online* activation will stop accepting the key if
you activate repeatedly in a short time. In that circumstance, you phone.
