Repairing XP after SP2 'not possible'?

Hi:
I've suddenly lost all radiobuttons in all programs AND lost the text that
used to appear next to the program icons in my start-up menu. If there's a
known fix for this, someone please tell me.

Otherwise, I'm trying to repair my installation but get a message that,
since the version on my machine is more recent than the one on my CD-ROM
installation disk, I'm going to lose all my files and settings.

I can understand that I might lose settings (such as Windows scheme, etc)
but I don't understand why I'd lose Word files, for example, just by
re-installing XP from the original CD-ROM.

Please help and enlighten me.

Thank you in advance.

John,

unless somebody knows this particular defect and comes forward
with a specific solution, a repair installation is the normal
way to proceed (after thorough virus and spyware checking and
perhaps using sfc, the system file checker).

After SP2 is installed, you need a "slipstream" install CD for
that, a CD where SP2 is already included. Please check
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm for details.
I can understand that I might lose settings (such as Windows scheme, etc)
but I don't understand why I'd lose Word files, for example, just by
re-installing XP from the original CD-ROM.

A repair installation doesn't touch your data, but if you
reinstall from scratch, there are a few potential problems that
could lead to data loss, for example:

* Removing the partition and reinstalling into a new
partition---data in the old partition would be lost.

* The new installation has no access rights to the old
data---can be solved by taking ownership and changing the access
rights.

* Data may be stored in profile folders that may not be
accessible or may get lost. At least the data would apparently
not be in the same place after reinstallation.

* Certain pieces of data may be in the system folders and may
get lost.

Otherwise your data should survive even an installation from
scratch, as long as the partition and the data folders remain.

Thanks very much, Hans. That's extremely helpful info.

John,

you're welcome. Please keep the newsgroup posted if you get the
problem solved and if you find the time.

Hans-Georg

Sorry to trouble you, again, Hans, but I've run into a problem:

All has gone very well up to the point that I'm working on the slipstream
process and the instructions (I'm following
http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20040908/winxp-sp2-integra...) tell me to
change to the directory c:\i386\update and then run 'update' with the
/integrate parameter.

Unfortunately, the directore c:\i386\update doesn't exist on my computer.

Where do I find this 'update' program?

Thank you!

not exactly. They mention the i386\update folder, but that is

Thanks for the clarification, Harns, and, yes, I found the correct directory
but when I performed the update /integrate:c:\win_cd\cd I got the following
errormessage:

Service Pack 2 Setup:
"This Service Pack cannot be integrated into a destination that also has
integrated Software Updates. Consult the Lervice Pack documentation for more
details about supported integration scenarios."

I assume this is because the CD-ROM with WINXP came with Service Pack 1
already integrated on it.

Is there a way around this obstacle?

Thanks for your patience!

Are you trying to repiar while in Windows or from booting the XP CD? If the

John,

sorry, but I don't know. I'd search the Web for an appropriate

Steps to slipstream OEM Dell SP1 CD - likely works for others too
1)copy CD to HD
2)go into I386
3)Delete SVCPACK Directory
4)Delete SVCPACK DL File
5)Delete SVCPACK.Inf file
6) Continue slipstream as normal

Hello John,
You get this error when there are other hotfixes that are
slipstreamed(Integrated) into the installation folder (i386).
Those hotfixes need to be removed before you do the \integrate. Having SP1
slipstreamed or integrated should not make any difference, it's other
hotfixes that cause this block to be in the \integrate process.
This block has to exist of the \integrate does not work properly. Files
may not be upgraded during the integration process.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello Jim
Please don't do this. That block exists in the \integrate porcess for a
reason.
SP1 slipstreamed or integrated into the i386 folder does not affect this
process.
This block exists for other hotfixes or updates that have been integrated
into the i386 folder. To get around this they need to be removed first.
If you bypass the block, you will not get all the most updated files, you
may have file-mismatches that now occur. Files will now not be updated
properly.
So you can have installation errors or random errors post installation.
It depends on which files have been integrated into the i386 folder.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

I've already successfully used the CD to do 2 repair installs.
Are you suggesting that it is enough to empty the SVCPACK folder of just
hotfixes replaced by SP2 & keep OEM files?

Hello Jim,
that is correct it is not enough, you would have to remove any updated OS
files ( other than SP1 files) from the I386 folder as well that have been
integrated in to it. OEM files shouldn't matter since the service pack is
not updating them.
Those files may not be updated when you integrate the service pack. The
install may fail, or it may not fail. The component that uses those files
may have problems, specific to that file that should have updated to the
file in the service pack. The problem may not be obvious or it may happen
only under specific circumstances.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
