Hi

I have an Advent 3208 with the original XP installation and recovery discs.
The config has a number of flaws that seem to be recognised in various
newsgroups (network wizard crashes/missing functionality/etc.). The latest
one is that it will not accept an installation of SP2.

I have bought another full upgrade copy of XP for an old ME machine. My
question is whether I can also use this disc to reinstall over the dodgy
Advent image? I am currently being bounced when I use the licence number
from the Advent installation. I do not want to use the number from the
upgrade CD as I understand that this will infringe the licence.

All help will be gratefully received.

Regards

Andrew

The Product Key that came with your computer will only
work with the computer manufacturer's recovery disks.
You'll have to contact Advent support and ask them for
their procedure to perform a "non-destructive" recovery.
The procedure may be outlined in the User's Guide that
came with your Advent computer.

As you've discovered.. no. Keys are matched with type of disk.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for
any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and
vice versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full
version CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to
install a retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with
an English CD.

Bottom line: Product Keys and CDs cannot be mixed & matched. You
have to have the specific type of installation CD for which that
license and Product Key was designed.
