Repair XP

I have been having some recurring odd problems for some time with my
Windows XP. I am considering doing a Windows "repair" from the original
install disk.

Does anyone have any suggestions comments or warnings to offer?

Hi

A 'Repair' install should retain all your settings, files and programs.
However you may like to backup your valuable data files beforehand. having
said that, I've never had a problem with a 'Repair' install:

In addition to Will's advice, you should also be aware that you will lose
Windows updates. Also, if you've applied SP2, you won't be able to run a
repair install from an original XP CD which is sans SP2, because the install
will detect a more recent version of the OS. In that case, you should
slipstream SP2 into your install CD prior to doing the repair install.

Could you explain "slipstream SP2?"

Yes I did install SP2. I had hoped, but did not expect, it to correct
all or some of the problems. It made no noticeable difference other than
changing a few security settings. I guess I should be happy after hearing
about some people's problems with it.

I'll explain slipstreaming on the condition that you explain your sig.
The idea is to create a new XP install CD with SP2 incorporated into it,
so you don't have to install the OS and then install XP. The process is
fairly simple. First go here, http://tinyurl.com/4unoh and download
Autostreamer, a free utility that will guide you through the process and
help you to create an ISO image which you can then burn to a CD. All you
have to do is have your XP and SP2 disks handy, start the program and
follow the prompts.

Thanks for the explanation. As for SP2, if you just took the Windows
Update download, I don't think it can be had at this point--I may be
wrong about that, so I hope someone who knows for sure will jump in. The
alternative is to order the CD from MS, or download the install package.
I don't know how much of a hurry you're in, but the mail order CD
usually takes less than a week. See the MS XP page.

Exuse me for jumping in here .But I have a problem doing a repair on
my Gateway OEM Home version. I made a slipsteam disk with Original Oem
disk and SP2 disk I downloaded.using Autostreamer . It goes Ok until
It shows a message that it needs ASMS file. If I type in the location
it doesnt seem to do anything.It lists a few locations but wont take
any I add. Thanks
