Repair XP problem

Hi, All,

I have a Dell XPS 600 with Windows XP Media Center Edition. I got an error
message, it said that “ Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: \Windows\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. You can attempt to
repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.
Select ‘r’ at the first screen to start repair.

So, I boot up from setup CD-ROM. Then I select ‘r’ to repair the XP
installation, I saw that they copied files, then it restart computer
automatically, then access to Window XP setup screen to installing. At this
time, the computer stuck, it shows on Installing Devices.

What I can do now? Can I turn off the computer? Can anybody help me out?

Thanks in advance

How long have waited on the installation process to continue ?
Usually a 20-30 minutes wait is enough to determine that it is
indeed hung up or stalling.

The setup process will automatically rerun the next time you
boot the PC. You may want to do a "Soft Reset" if you PC has
the button to do that. Otherwise just do a power off ( Some
PC's require you hold the button in for a few seconds, to keep
from doing accidental power offs.)

I'd probably unplug any peripherals you have ( Printers, USB
devices and the like ) and let setup retry to repair install.

I'd probably unplug any peripherals you have ( Printers, USB
devices and the like ) and let setup retry to repair install.

He may also consider removing any cards he's had installed since getting
the computer, and then try a reinstall. Sadly he's already started the
repair process, had he not, assuming he could get a Bart Disc, he would
have been able to save the machine by replacing the corrupted hive with a
known good copy.

Hi, McCarty,

Thank you so much for your help.
How long have waited on the installation process to continue ?
Usually a 20-30 minutes wait is enough to determine that it is
indeed hung up or stalling.

I was waiting for more than 1 1/2 hours. Final, I have to turn off the
computer.

The setup process will automatically rerun the next time you
boot the PC. You may want to do a "Soft Reset" if you PC has
the button to do that. Otherwise just do a power off ( Some
PC's require you hold the button in for a few seconds, to keep
from doing accidental power offs.)

You means that the process with automatically rerun when I turn on the
computer next time, right? If I boot from setup CD, can I do repair install
again?
I'd probably unplug any peripherals you have ( Printers, USB
devices and the like ) and let setup retry to repair install.

I am sorry that I don't understand what you means. I didn't plug any
external devices when I did repair install this time. Should I plug
peripherals which I have when I will do repair install in the future?

Thanks in advance,

Hi, Dustin,

Thank you very much for your help.
He may also consider removing any cards he's had installed since getting

repair process, had he not, assuming he could get a Bart Disc, he would
have been able to save the machine by replacing the corrupted hive with a
known good copy.

You means that I shoud make a Bart Disc before I did repair install, right?
What is a Bart Disc? How to create it? Is there anyway that I can do for make
it?

When I did repair install, I noticed that there is Recovery Console. Can I
use it to help me out? Do you know any command which I can use to fix my
problem?

Thanks in advance,
