Repair XP Home Edition

Toni

I upgrades to XP Home Edition and it has been running
relatively well until now.

I have not downloaded nor installed anything new, but,
all of a sudden, XP Home Edition is doing some quirky
things.

Is there a way to "repair" XP. I have inserted the
upgrade disk and looked everywhere. All I see
is "Install". Is it OK to reinstall or is there a better
solution ?

Boot from your XP disk and it will be one of the options you receive.
support.microsoft.com also has some answers under running a Repair
installation.

Before you try a repair install you should try a couple of other things. A
repair will require you to reinstall all updates. First do a complete system
virus scan with up to date software. Then check for spyware with a program
such as Ad Aware 6, from www.lavasoftusa.com. Also check system files by
running the system file checker. Click Start, Run, then type in "sfc
/scannow" in the run box. Don't type the quotes, and be sure to leave the
space after sfc. Insert your XP CD and click OK. This will replace any
corrupted system files.
Let us know if you solve the problems.

Not a run from the present system: but Set the BIOS to boot CD before
Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take 'Repair' at
this stage), then after the license agreement take 'Repair
Installation'. This will retain your existing software installations
and most settings. But Updates will have to be run again, especially
SP1 if it is not included in your CD (there will be a note on the CD
itself if it is there); It is important to activate the basic XP
Firewall before you ever connect to the net to get the patches, so as to
be protected against things like the BLAST worm.

Always back up essential data before doing any major system operation
like this, if you are still in a position to do so
