Repair Problem

After an XP Home system Repair, not a reinstall, the system is missing many
programs and not working well.
I noticed that C: shows All Users and All Users Windows 2, Default User and
Default User Windows 2.
There is no second system choice at boot up. Only one shows in Boot.ini.
How can I get to the better of the two or get this system workung properly?

After an XP Home system Repair,

Exactly what did you do, and how did you do it?

not a reinstall, the system is missing many
programs

*What* programs are missing?

and not working well.

And exactly what does that mean? Please specify the symptoms as
clearly as possible. If you get error messages, please quote them
verbatim.

My guess,is that when you did the repair, you didn't choose Windows 1
when it asked you which Windows you wanted.I think you must have chosen
(2),if so then it creates another set of system files in Windows 2 (I
think).
If I'm right, then your original progs can't find the right path to your
progs on Windows 1.
Try changing the path for your progs to see them in Windows 2.

I could be wrong though because it's years since I did a repair install.

What type of Windows XP do you have is it Home Retail or an OEM version that
came with your PC, as supplied by the PC manufacturer.?
If it is the OEM version that came with the PC then the chances are you
cannot carry out a repair install and you have reinstalled windows into a a
new folder called windows2.
To check if you open a cmd prompt and type "path" (no quotes) and press
return the result will be something like this:

PATH=C:\Program Files\PC Connectivity Solution\;C:\WINDOWS\system32

if the entry "C:\Windows\system32" shows "C:\Windows2\system32" then you
have installed a fresh copy of windows into a new folder.

if you think you have
multiple o.s.'s but
only one is appearing
in the menu,

you can use the
bootcfg /rebuild
command via the
repair / recovery
console.

just reboot with the
xp cd and select
repair .

but if you actually initiated
a "repair installation" it is
not likely that it installed
to operating system again,

unless you made a mistake.

during the "repair installation"
process, a search for pre
installed os's will take place
and a listing will be provided
in a window.

if you highlight and select the
o.s. it found on the system,
it will repair it.

but if you didn't highlight it
the o.s. it found and continued
with the process,

then you likely did install
another os on the disk,
paralleling the one you
had.

it is a simple mistake that
is easy to make.

Yes, it was a Dell OEM Disk but path shows Windows not Windows 2. Is it
possible that the original is Windows 2 and the new copy is Windows? At this
point I am considering a format and a total new install unless you have a
better idea to try first.

I think it's unlikely the original was installed as Windows2. If you use
explorer to check is there just on "windows" folder.?

Perhaps it would be better to format & install to be sure.
