I am attempting a repair install of win xp home but am stuck at preparing
install as it is asking me for asms file that i cannot load because cd isnt
responding. I understand from article
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=311755 that there is a fix using 98SE
boot disk and 98SE cd . I dont have 98SE but first ed 98, will the fix work
using 98 boot disk and 98 cd?

After reading your "Several" threads on this, I would suggest you take that
computer to a technician as soon as possible. I would say you have the file
system so scrambled that it is going to need more than the average
reinstall. I would say that you are going to have to completely reformat the
hard drives and let someone Install windows in the proper manner.
It is clear from your multiple posts that you aren't familiar with Windows
operating system or Windows XP file systems. The tech can remove any needed
data and personal files for you and perhaps salvage your current programs
(if he is a lucky man).
Best Wishes

For your information Rick, I have the machine back and running. I got a Win
98 SE Boot disk and cd, copied smartdrv and xcopy to the boot disk (over 2
disks actually) Inserted winxp and xcopied i386 to hard drive, rebooted and
ran setup again. it booted rapidly to the install screen and asked me for
the asms file which i typed in the path that was now located on my Hard
drive C:\i386 and it installed the rest of the os. I am now busy
reinstalling updates. Ok the machine is in a bit of a bad way but all I
really wanted to do was get some of the info off that I hadn't backed up and
then I'll reformat and start with a clean machine, this of course I couldn't
do before. I knew about the fix but it sounded pretty messy to me, I thought
that there was a quick fix, hoping that someone would recognise something,
hence the multiple posts. anyway things have turned out ok, thanks to
everyone who offered thier help and support including your good self
