Can't get to repair install

System will not boot up. Running Windows XP SP2 Home Edition upgrade. Tried
everything and disc check found and repaired errors but still nothing.
Attempting a repair install with sliptreamed CD. Acknowledge agreement and
then CD asks to see previous product (upgrade) so put Windows 98 SE disk in
and hit enter. Next screen indicates new install on C: partition. I never
get a repair prompt. Final screen gives choices to Format all in NTFS, Quick
format to NTFS or leave as is and install. How can I get to repair install.
I have tried everything.

Since you do not get a prompt to repair...that means there is no windows
installation left on the
drive!!!!

If there was any data on the drive you needed you will need to pull the
drive and put in in another
machine to see if there is anything there which is salvageable.

I'd also run the mfg's HD utility on the drive as it may just plain be bad

A friend of mine went through hell trying to repair with the installation
media (days). I suggested that she hit F8 as the system booted and to select
the "last known good" option. Worked for her.

I tried everything. It boots up to the banner then the drive just stops and
nothing. I used both my original XP disc as well as the slipsteamed SP2
version I built. Neither gets me to a repair. Ran disk check utility and
thought drive ok. Used Bartpe to copy many data files to second hard drive
just in case but want to do repair in stall if possible. Everything I read
says I should get to repair. Only complication is that this is an upgrade CD
which I still have previous 98SE product CD.

I have tried everything from last known good, safe mode, safe mode with
networking and boot normally. This thing is really bad as the HD just stops.
I am almost to a point to format and start from scratch.

Look - lots of dialogue here - the only valid response was the first by
"philo" - if (booting from the CD drive) you are asked to insert a previous
version CD - you are up the creek (no paddle) - an installation of windows
cannot be found.
One option - try to install the recovery console as a menu option. At
prompt (with XP CD in drive) - Type the following where D: is the CD-ROM
drive letter: D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons (Will not work if XP installation
is "really" kaput!!!)
