installation doesn't work

I get to 39 mins of xp installation and then i get a message to install asms
file. apparnently this means that the cdrom isnt communicating with setup.
how do i overcome this as i dont have any other windows disks. It asks for a
win 98 disk second edition which should load the cd drivers. can i download
anything that will help?
