Will try to make a long story short. Laptop HP ZE5460 US stopped booting
properly. Suspect a virus. Restores did not work and process to fix via
Recovery Console from MS did not work either. I did a Repair Install from
original CD Win XP sp1 that came with Laptop. Used various programs to
recover. VCOM etc. I have PC back to where it will boot and I see users so
I think I am almost there. Got activation screen. Called number and tried
to activate. Get "The confirmation ID is invalid. Please check number and
try again". Operator tried to help and did not work, got disconnected.
Called back and second person tries again. Says key is valid but can't
understand why it won't work, transfers me to Tech support. Tech support
says they have it fixed. Give me back to activation and no go. I call thrid
time again with no luck and they give me a new key to try so we know that is
good. Still no luck, same message. They say to call HP. I call HP and open
a ticket but they don't have any real solution either. I now try a repair
install using the new key. This time I can get to telephone activate and ID
is confirmed. They give me the numbers to enter and I have verifed this two
different times. Sounds like it is going to work and then I press next. I
don't get Finished I get the error message. I have been all over MS and the
Internet and I have tried just about everything. Is anyone familiar with
this problem. I know I have a valid key as I got it from MS and the
telephone activation confirms also. Just can't get PC to take final step. I
have been workin on this for over three weeks so any help would be greatly
appreciated!!!

Brad,

I have had this happen before also, I just did a Quick Restore of my
computer. I backed up all data etc, restored computerthen I had to re-install
Windows XP because I upgraded from Windows ME after that it worked fine and I
have a clean machine. That what I do when I have a problem I cannot fix which
has happened several times.

Linda Thanks.

Do you have the directions on how to save and transfer files before doing a
new install? This is my daughter's laptop and I have a desktop PC that I
could use. Or perhaps you know of a support site that steps you thru it?

Thanks again for taking the time to give me an answer.

Use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and have it save the files
to your machine.

Then after the clean install run FASTW again to import the saved info
from your machine.
