Renoving IPX causes the following issue...

We have XP Pro, SP1 (we are a corp network that has reasons not to be on
XP2). We have removed the IPX protocol from out network adapters, but find
upon reboot the PC does not get it's mapped Win2000/2003 server drives. The
pc will see the novell mapped drives, but not any microsoft mapped drives. We
use the novell login client, and all of our mapped drives are mapped via
login script. The users themselves don't have the ability to create a mapped
drive.

Why can we no longer see the MS mapped drives but can see the Novell drives?

One of the advantages of using IPX is it isn't subject to firewalling. No IP
problems either.

What protocols do the servers use? Name resolution is very complicated for IP
clients and servers.

And the domain has to be setup properly for both clients and servers.

Chuck,

Thanks for the attempted reply. However, these steps really don't apply to
us. We are a very large hospital network (7000 users, 6000 pc's and 2100
servers). Our config with IP/firewalling etc has been working fine. It's
definitely something more XP desktop related than it is network/firewall
related. We're looking more at how the MS GINA isn't passing credentials
since the IPX has been taken off.

Any further thoughts, of course, are appreciated.

OK, David,

My articles, so far, focus on Windows Networking and the standard, supported IP
network stack. There are lots of details on that issue, not a lot about IPX.

If you want to throw in some details about your troubleshooting to date, maybe
similar in granularity to how I describe IP networking, we may be able to help
you. Without knowing what you've done to date (and if you're talking about a
10,000 host network surely you've done a lot), we're at a disadvantage.
