Renaming Windows System folder

My computer was originally a display model and since I bought it the
registered name has not been mine (for ease we shall say 'Jayne'). I have
just changed the 'registered to' name in the general tab of the System
window, but 'Jayne' is still plastered all over my computer.

There is a 'Jayne' folder in Documents and Settings which I think is the
cause of it all but when I try to change it, a message appears saying it is a
windows system folder and therefore cannot be renamed.

Is there any way around this?

Don't change it; there's a much easier way around this. Create new
accounts for yourself, and subsequently delete the old Jayne account, and
when asked, say YES to deleting that account's files.

Just be sure you've got copies of everything you might need from that folder
structure, including the hidden-folder contents like email and address
books.

Thanks. I have my own account already so I created a new folder with my name
and copied everything from the Jayne folder, but it won't let me delete the
Jayne folder, and all the pathways for files still say C:\Documents and
Settings\Jayne\My Documents (etc). I don't know how to change it...

I have now changed the target pathway on the My Documents Properties window
so that files are taken from the new folder with my name. If there is any way
of deleting the original Jayne folder though that would be great...

To fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP, you can use
Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some
read the registered owner information dynamically, while others read
it only during installation.

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed, even if the associated user account has been.
So, your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in
Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username
desired. You can then delete the old user account(s).
