Renaming files within Windows Explorer

Using XP/SP2
Putting meaningful names to digital photos (.jpg) in a subfolder.
After renaming 4 or 5 files, W Explorer has error and has to close (with
great difficulty). Restart Explorer or entire computer - find sub-folder
causes this error again when I try to open it. I can copy it to CDRW, delete
sub-folder and then copy it back, but it still crashes in the next renaming
session. Have tried a different sub-folder with different files but the same
happens. New file names are 40 to 50 characters. Ideas please! Is this a
bug in Windows Explorer?

I don't know the exact reason, but if you are deep into subfolders, you may be
hitting a limitation on file length. I think the max length is around 255
characters or
something, but I have heard that the 255 characters includes folder names.
So if
you are in "C:\My Files\Pictures\New Pictures\More New Pictures\Newer
Pictures\"
(you get the idea), you may be hitting a problem.

P.S. When renaming files, have you tried a renamer? They make it much easier
to rename files. A good one for digital photos is Name Dropper.
