Can't rename files

I'm running Windows XP Pro. I've been trying to rename
some files, but whenever I right click on them, I get a Windows
Explorer Error message and Explorer closes down. I've also tried selecting the
file, then choosing File > Rename and I get the same annoying resulots.

The error message is simply:
Windows Explorer:
Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience.

After a few tries, I seem to figure it has to do with file names in excess of
about 80 characters. A couple are around 90, or 100 characters, and the file
names, as I downloaded them include parentheses and tilde marks. Could this be
the problem?

The files are all mp3 files, and the names include album, artist, track number,
song title. What I'm trying to do is eliminate all but the song titile, and
Windows isn't letting me do anything at all with the file names.

Seems to me there should be a way to work with these file names. Can someone
offer any suggestions? Thanks.

maybe they're marked as read only files?
