Rename file

Help!! anytime I try to rename a file or picture, I right click, go to "rename" and actually type in the new name, only to have XP Pro tell me words to the effect:
"If you change the file name extension, the file may become unusable, are you sure you want to change it?" Of course, when I decide "yes," sure enough teh file becomes unusable, and I can not convince the thing that I am not interest4ed in changing the file name extension, but the file name.

This thing surre is bugging me!!

Thanks for any help you can send on.

When you rename the file, are you retaining the old extension? Do that.

If you cannot see the extensions, open Windows Explorer VIEW menu|FOLDER
OPTIONS|VIEW tab and UNhide extensions for registered file types.

I had the very same problem, the only way I could keep the file [jpg] usable
was to include the .jpg extention after the name change. Now here's the
kicker, until just recently whenever I changed the name of a picture all I
had to do was change the name, no file ext. required and everthing was ok.
Don't know why it isn't now. Haven't recofigured, at least not knowingly.
Anyone out there now a way around this?

Go to folder options..view tab and put a check in Hide Extensions for known
file types. That should do it.
