File type in the file name, how to get rid of this?

OK, don't know how this happend but all of a sudden every file that isn't a
folder has its file type included with the file name. Like, if i try to
rename it to get rid of the file type (say, image1.jpg to image1, like a
regularly worded file), it says...

"Rename - If You change a file name extension, the file may become unusable.
Are you sure you want to change it? yes/no"

This has never happend in the 10+ years I've been computing. Any idea how to
get things back to normal so I can just see the file name and not the file
name and type?

Check the following:
Go to Control Panel and double click Folder Options.
Click on the View tab.
In the Advanced Settings box, make sure there's a check mark in
the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types".
Click OK.

Good luck
