File rename problem

When I try to rename a file of any type (mpeg, mp3 etc) it comes up with a
box when i press enter. the box says "If you change a file name extension,
the file may become unusable do you wish to proceed" if I click yes to
proceed the file name changes but the file becomes a dat file.

How can I stop this happening. I had windows XP on my last PC and this never
happened?

Dave,

Are you saying that the .DAT extension appended to the renamed file automatically?

Its because you are changing the file extention - the letters after the dot.
When changing a file make sure you dont delete the whole name just the stuff
before the dot (period).

To make it easier (which was probably set on our old PC) tell windows to
hide file extentions, this way when renaming you can delete the whole name
and retype and it should work.

In My Computer click 'Tools', 'Folder Options...'
Click on the 'View' tab
Under the 'Advanced settings:' box check the 'Hide extentions for known file
types'
