Removing Windows Messenger

Can I remove the Windows Messenger?

Sometimes Windows Messenger makes me bang the head in the wall :=) If I sign
out of the MSN Messenger and my internet link goes away, then it auto login
with the Windows Messenger.

From the run command, type gpedit.msc.
Choose Administrative Templates; then Windows Messenger.
Highlight "Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run" and
read the notes listed to the left. It is by default, NOT
CONFIGURED, which means it is able to run. You can double
click on it or choose properties and configure it to run
OR enable it. It will not run if you choose this option.

But it will come back....

CTL-ALT-DEL to shut down the service, then go to C:\ProgramFiles\Messenger
and rename the folder (I use MessengerOld as the name). MSN Messenger will
never be seen again.

Are you sure?
I toggled it off a month ago when I changed to MSN Messenger & haven't seen
it since, yet I can still toggle it on manually with that Run instruction if
I wish to.

Modify the file C:\Windows\Inf\Sysoc.inf to remove the word "Hide"
from the pertinent Windows Components entries. Be sure to leave the
two surrounding commas in place. (Iow, change the line
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7" to read
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7") Save and exit Notepad.

Then click Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > windows
Components. You'll now be able to see Messenger listed.

Hi, Bruce,
I seem do remember reading recently that MSN Messenger 6.2 is dependent on
Windows Messenger being installed (operative or not) otherwise it won't
work.

I did as you suggested, removing the word "hide," but Messenger still doesn't
show up on my "add/remove programs" list. Where is it?

Windows Messenger is part of Windows (MSN Messenger is not).
You can remove it from Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components

Go to Start/Run, and type:

"rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128
%SystemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf"

Hi there, I've just downloaded MSN messenger version 6.2.0137 on my new
computer which operates windows xp and came with windows messenger. The
thing that is annoying me is that when anyone opens up me Messenger all they
have to do is click on "sign in" and it automatically signs into my account.
How can I disable that? I have been to the "tools" menu, "general" tab and
unticked the "allow automatic sign in when connected to the net" however
still when I start up my messenger all someone has to do is click sign in and
they get into my account.
