cannot uninstall Live Messeger and add Msn

I want to get rid of Windows live Messenger because it slows down other
applications on my PC and download an older Msn messenger. but when I do so I
get a window that tells me that I must install the latest Messenger to
continue. How cam I stop this, surely I can have an older application.
