removing programs from start up

aa

I want to stop some porgrams like AIM and ICQ automatically start up when
w2k starts.
I was advised that there is no way of doing this short of deleting relevant
entries from
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

I fould theses entried in the above path. yet I was warned that I shouyld do
it opnly if I know what I am doing.

I know that I am removing AIM entry from
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and Mirablis ICQ from HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
keys in order to stop them from automatically run on Windows start up.

Can this lead to somethong other then stopping AIM and ICQ?

As long as you know what you're doing no problem. Back them up before hand.
File|Export the keys in question.

You may want to use a startup manager type application. One such
is Sysinternals AutoRuns
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml
More at
http://lists.gpick.com/pages/System_Startup_Tools.htm]

Most or all of these will "store" the entry you want disabled and
allow you to enabled it again later.

One can do the same thing manually by "moving" a valuename=data to
a parallel key.

I can recommend the Startup Control Panel.

Thank, Dave, As I said, I have already heard this saying and memorised it.
In practice - I found these the pathes and indeed there are entries there
mentioning the two programs.
Can I delete them without getting side effects?
