removing Defender from XP Pro SP2

I recently purchase Trend Micro Internet Security 2007, and they just
released an update. When I try to install it, it says I must remove Defender
before it will install the update. When I tried (uisng Add/Remove), it almost
did it, but Then gave me a Fatal Error without any desc or number. So I
removed the files from the directory, and removed the Service using MSconfig.

Trend Micro STILL insists that I remove Defender. Is there a way to manually
remove it?>

Thanks!!

I think you might be digging yourself a grave. There are ways to go into the
registry and get rid of Windows Defender. It might be simpler to go back to
a previous restore point before you tried to uninstall Windows Defender. Try
uninstalling Trend Micro first. Then uninstall Windows Defender. If you get
a clean uninstall of Windows Defender, then reinstall Trend Micro and the
update. Good luck.

Only wish I could offer better advice than Mr Cat. When you start to remove
applications manually you have to also remove those references from the
registry - which is why Trend Micro`s installer still sees WD on your system.
There are some good registry cleaners available but unless you are confident
with their in depth use, go Mr Cat`s way if you can - hope you made a restore
point before fiddling.

the bigger question to me is, why does TrendMicro insist that defender be
removed. And is it then possible afterwards to reinstall defender?
thanks

Well, I tried to use System Restore, but it couldn't restore any restore
points that I chose, so after the fifth try, I gave up. I then came up with
a brilliant idea (if I say so myself) = reinstall Windows Defender 1.0 and
then turn right around and uninstall it. Guess what? It worked. Now to
attend to upgrade Trend Micro. Onward and upwards, so they say. Thanks guys!

Hi PC PC guy,

well done, if you want you can install defender again, no need for
because Venus Spytrap, does the same as WD, so a lot of double things
(window popups).

I suspect that they have incorporated an antispyware app, and either there
is a potential or actual conflict, or they are just being careful that the
total number of real-time scanners involved on a given system is kept to a
minimum.

My prescription would be to reinstall Windows Defender, and then uninstall
it immediately, and see if that works cleanly--I suspect it would.
