How to remove Defender??

G

Guest

I cannot remove, update or Re-load Defender. I get a message that says there
is an older version of Defender that cannot be removed. I have tried using
Add/Remove function but it does not work. I have tried to download a current
version bit it will not install.

How do I remove the "old" version.

Ken, I can help you fix this, but let me ask a non-sequiter first: Do you
use Microsoft Office on this machine?

Is "microsoft.private.security.spyware.install = installation NG" a WEB
address? I do not understand what it is or how to find it.

question.

Be patience and good luck

Here's the quandry:

There's a tool called the Windows Installer cleanup tool--this is a
Microsoft tool, you can google and get the download link (it is a link
within a Microsoft KB article explaining the purpose and usage of the tool.

This should do the job--or at least allow you to reinstall and then
uninstall again to get a clean uninstall.

HOWEVER. Use of this tool breaks OfficeUpdate, and MicrosoftUpdate with
regard to Office Patches.

And, there's presently an unpatched vulnerability in Word which will get
fixed 2nd Tuesday in June, (if all goes as planned).

So, it's important that Office remain patchable. I believe that the general
fix for the issues created by the tool, (which are not immediately obvious)
is a reinstall or repair install of Office.

If you are comfortable with that eventuality (and perhaps other apps as
well--Adobe Reader might be one...)--I'd be happy to tell you more about the
Installer cleanup tool. Basically, you install it, run it from Start, all
Programs, find your desired app on the list, highlight it, and hit a button
to remove the installer traces of that app. That should both remove it from
add or remove programs, and allow for a clean reinstall and subsequent
uninstall, which may clean up better.

Tom - this may be a good tool--nothing I know to the contrary, but I'm
probably not going to use it in posts at this point because a) it probably
isn't signed code, b) the vendor won't be someone known and loved by most
readers <g>--and I'm not sure what side-effects it might have.

So--feel free to follow me around posting that one--if it works, I'm happy
to have folks use it, but I'm not sure I can feel comfortable recommending
it myself yet.

Hi Bill,

ok, understand, is a nice tool, i hope you take a look at it, on the
right site of the window you got the info of the program and the
uninstall way.
Did several things with it and no problems so far.

Hi Bill,

of topic, i did some test scans today and custom scans are working like
it was meant, it just scans the map you choose and not the quick scan on
the C:\ first!! I don't know when this was fixed?

I've seen one other report of this, so I asked the question in a Vista
Windows Defender chat today, and was told, by Mike Chan, that there was no
change to the behavior, and a quickscan was still done before the selected
custom areas.

I'll see if I can do some testing, but:

Summer is almost here, and our neighborhood outside swimming pool opens for
daily use Saturday (or maybe tomorrow.)--and we always have a party with our
neighbors on Monday--Memorial day. So I may be putting a little less effort
in...!

Tom - This did not work - for some reason uninstall thinks the file is on a
network or cannot find the file.

Hi Ken,

remove the folder of WD, if there still programs are running, stop them
with task manager, after that.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/regscanner.zip
Search for Defender and Giant and delete all items found.
Then close Your AV for the moment and try a new install.
