Removable Storage Problem

I have a problem with my PC
Upgraded to service pack 2, now none of my removable storage devices are
working correctly.
FDD comes up with Please insert disk into drive a:
CD loads, but displays no files or folders on disk, Disc name remains CD-Rom
(D:)
Tested Digital Camer USB connection and USB Disk both show as removable
Drive (E:) - gives same response as FDD when trying to access either
Tested USB Scanner - tested OK
Booted to safe mode and retried devices - all working normally, all access
is available
Run msconfig, set for diagnostic startup and rebooted to normal desktop -
Found devices connected during boot were avaiable (USB Disk and Camera), but
if removed and reconnected, reverted to previous problem, CD and FDD still
same
Tested booting from FDD and CD - Both booted OK
Would really appreciate any ideas, had this problem before and ended up
rebuilding entire OS from scratch was only thing that worked.
 
USB Hub Power Management - disable : Start/run, type DEVMGMT.MSC , then rightclick each USB Hub device, Properties, uncheck the box
on the Power Management tab.

Tried that already, made no difference, I dont think the problem is a USB
problem as I have a USB scanner and that is working OK (Bear Paw Scanner).
The FDD is connected to the FDC and the CD rom is connected to the IDE. I
found that if I boot windows with a disc in each drive, they are both
accessable until I remove them. When I re-insert, they revert back to
unreadable. Problem appears to be with windows and its interface with
removable storage devices.
 
Locate and click the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider On the Edit
menu, click Permissions . Click the registry key for the user that is currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control are
both set to Allow . Click the Advanced button, ensure that the user that is currently logged on is selected, that Full Control is
listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column. Click to select the Replace
permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects check box. Click Apply , and then click
Yes when you receive a prompt to continue. Click OK , and then click OK again

Tried it and rebooted, but no change
everything was already set as it should be, but i wnet through the steps
anyway
anymore ideas?
 
Nope, not this one, followed all steps, everything was as it shoud have
been.
Autorun for the CD rom drive does not work though
Should I just give up and rebuild Windows?

I was really reluctant to suggest something so labor intensive, when so many people are reporting various symptoms like yours.
Something in SP2 is obviously at fault, but the problem has so many fixes, it's hard to say which way you should go.

The nice thing about a rebuild, of course, would be that you would Know it is a 'incompatible' driver problem, and be able to look
for something there. On the other hand, 'relic damage' from fixing spyware, or virus would be fixed by a rebuild.

If you run an XP "Upgrade"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it might go into
a setup loop, and you could lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you Upgrade setup from CD (that lacks sp2 on it.)
