Remote registry access and XPSP2 firewall

What do I need to do to enable remote registry access through the XPSP2
firewall? I have allowed file and print sharing (I thought this would
do it because the registry is just a few configuration files after all).
I have also allowed remote desktop and the items I have specifically
allowed all work fine, just can't figure out exactly how to allow remote
registry access. Having difficulty finding info on how to do this while
googling usenet or the web. Thanks in advance for any help.

What type of registry access do you want to do remotely? Computer specific
("HKLM..."), or user specific ("HKCU...")? What file sharing authentication are
you using on the server (target computer) - Guest, or non-Guest?

Try enabling the exception for remote administration as shown in the link

Both if possible.

Whatever the default is when accessing the registry remotely through
regedit.

Hi Chuck, thanks for the reply. The links you have given me sound more
like file sharing access and correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think
that is the same type of access used for editing the registry remotely.
I enabled allow exception for file and print sharing, and that did not
let me in to edit the registry remotely. What is the permissions or
access required for remote registry? How does it work?

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply. I took a look at this article and it
looks like it has good information in it. I did the first part (enable
file and printer sharing) and it still was not working. As I am trying
to do this from on Windows XP SP2 machine to another, would I find a
Windows Firewall GPO on an XP machine? If so, where? Because the
article is about Server 2003 and I'm working with XP, I'm a bit confused.

If you don't have administrative access to file shares, you won't have
administrative access to registry shares. Guest access (to file shares) will
not give you registry access.

OK, thats good to know. Thanks Chuck. I'm a domain admin so it seems I
should have permissions, and it should work if I have file and print
sharing allowed in the firewall. Hmmm, puzzling. When I disable the
firewall and try it it works, so I am positive it is the firewall
blocking me. And the firewall does not prompt the logged in user for
the remote registry access.

Any other suggestions? Thanks again.
