Remote Desktop Web

hi to all,

i managed to setup the remote desktop web connection on my XP Pro home pc
without problem. my home pc is connected to the internet directly with an
ADSL modem (no firewall). i also register my pc with a free DNS provider so
that i can ping my pc by domain name and return me an IP ex... abc.homeip.net.

finally, i use my company laptop (XP Pro) to make a direct 56K modem dial-up
to my ISP and key in the http://abc.homeip.net/tsweb/ in to the IE address
bar. it able me to connect successfully and my home pc screen shows up.

the problem is when i using my office LAN internet connection, i am not able
to make connection to my home pc. my laptop is set with internet connection
using proxy server 10.50.xx.xx port 8080. if the proxy is not use, i cannot
surf the net.

so, can any one pls tell me how to overcome this? with changing my home xp
pro listening port will help?

thank you.

I have a feeling you won't be able to do this.

I think you will need _direct_ connectivity from the client machine to your
home machine's port 3389 for the remote desktop client to be able to connect
to the remote desktop server.

Using the web connection just impliments the client in an ActiveX control.
The web client still connects to the server directly, normally on port 3389.

I think you still need the direct conectivity to the server machine,
which you don't have because you are behind a proxy.

Changing the remote desktop port won't help, unless you can find a
port that is directly accessible without going through the proxy.

I'm sure if I'm wrong, someone will correct me...

thanks ron,

most probably u are right. anyway i already change my home pc IIS port from
80 to 8080 and remain RDP-TCP at 3389. i will give it a try today. will let
u know later.

btw, how to find out a port that can directly access to my home pc through
my office LAN? any tools or software can do that? just wondering, why it is
so difference than surfing the web. i can surf anywhere with my current
proxy settting but just couldn't link to my home pc. arrr....!

pls help... thanks.

Like I said, you probably can't.

Your office lan is not connected to the Internet.
It's connected to a proxy, which in turn is connected to the Internet.

The proxy will make certain types of connection on LAN user's behalf,
and relay traffic between the Internet and the LAN clients.

It will only be set up to proxy certain types of traffic, eg WWW proxy.
So you can go to web pages, but that's about it.

And remote desktop web client is not like viewing a web page.
It's not a pure web-based thing.
It's just like using the regular remote desktop, but in a browser window.
And so it also needs the direct connection to the rd server.

Talk to your porxy admins and see if theres anything they can do to help.

hi ron,

after setting my home IIS port to 8080 and RDP-TCP remains 3389, i finally
able to browse my vitual directory setup at home from my office. before that
the IIS port was 80 and i could not connect to my home pc from my office LAN
internet.

now i kind of one step more towards connecting to my home pc. i will try
again to connect using the Remote Desktop Web using different port like 8082.
some one in the forum said it might works.

just trying and trying on... thanks.
