Remote Desktop Support

I apologize in advance if this question has been asked many times before.

I am in the US and have a PC with Windows XP Professional.

My deal old mother in Australia has an off-the-shelf Compaq PC
running Windows XP Home Edition.

I want to trouble shoot her problems by being able to see her
desktop from over here. I.e. I want to be a remote desktop client.

Which remote packages allow me to do this? My impression is that
neither Netmeeting nor Remote Desktop Connections allows XP professional
to connect to XP Home Edition.

I have tried setting the connection with all kinds of permutation of
Netmeeting and I can get a call established but when she clicks on
desktop->share, nothing happens.

If I share my screen she can see it.

Thanks,

David

You can't use Remote Desktop to remotely access/control an XP Home machine.
You could use Remote Assistance, open "Help and Support" and search on
'remote assistance', or UltraVNC as alternatives. You can get the UltraVNC
server, client, encryption plug-in (this is very important) and XP video
driver (for the UltraVNC host machine) from...

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

Note that if your mom is running behind a firewall or router you need TCP
Port 5900 open on the firewall. An alternative, and one that I have not
tried, is to use UltraVNC Single Click (SC)...

I think I would try Remote Assistance first in your case. Be aware you both
need to be running XP (Pro or Home) or Windows 2003 in order to use RA...

Good luck...

As a side note I must say you could use NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
(RDS) to remotely access/control your mom's PC. Personally I prefer UltraVNC
though simply because the response if much faster, at least in my experience,
particularly if you disable the rendering of the remote PCs desktop
wallpaper. That is configured on the server by the way.
