Remote Desktop Stopped working

C

Chad Lashley

I am running XP pro on both machines and have been using
RDC to connect from my laptop to my desktop for a year.
As of two weeks ago this has stopped working.

I get the login prompt on the laptop and then it hangs
and comes back with a timeout error. The desktop screen
goes blank and I have to ctrl-alt-del and guess at where
it is at to log back in. Eventually I get logged back
in. When I go to reboot it says one other user is
connected but there is not a connection I can even have
the laptop shut down and get this.

I have looked through event viewer and am not seeing
anything obvious. I am thinking this may have to do with
a recent service pack / hotfix but am not exactly sure
when it quit working.

Is there a log written to a file on either the host or
client I can use to get more info? Is there more logging
that can be turned on for event viewer? Any ideas on how
to fix this would be most helpfull I work remotely 2 or 3
days a week, but not since this has happened.

Is SP2 installed on one of theas systems? If so try to disable the build in
Firewall on both systems only for testing if the firewall is blocking the
connection.
Go to control panel>firewall>disable

If the RDC is ok after this still remember your system isnt save
anymore.(disable the firewall is for testing only)
Give me/us a reply

I have experienced a similar problem. I am using a pc with XPpro/SP2 and
connecting to a pc with XPpro. I am using the Xceedium web based product
running on a server that connects to my work intranet to create the secure
tunnel to the second computer. Prior to the installation of SP2, the
connection went flawlessly. Now, when I connect to the Xceedium server and
sign on to my network, the the universal port is available. When I start up
RDC, the log in window presents itself, but after the log on I am presented
with a "The client could not connect to remote computer. Remote
connections....blah...blah..." It is saying that there is a network problem.

While visiting with other staff members, I came up with another who updated
to SP2 and has run into the same problem.
I have disabled the XP firewall and the problem persists.
I have rebooted both computers.

Does anyone know the quickest way to undo the SP2 install?

Back for an update.

The removal of the SP2 resolves the RDC issue.

The network support at work is in contact with MS support and they were told
that there is a problem with SP2 and RDC as it relates to most any type of
VPN. There is a reported patch in the offing to fix the problem.
