Remote Desktop Setup FAQ?

D

Dick Sutton

Does anyone have a FAQ on setting up remote desktop where the XP Pro machine
will be connected to by both XP Pro & XP Home?

Also, this remote connection will be via the internet. The XP pro host will
be behind a router and Windows firewall is enabled on the XP Pro host
machine.

All the sites that I have visited by Google'ing are basically about setup
connections on an internal LAN.

Thanks in advance.

Remote Desktop (the host) can be run on XP PRo only; I'm not sure where Home
enters into this (you can connect *from* it, but not *to* it).

You can open up Remote Desktop access in the Windows firewall, but for
access to it over the Internet, you need to open up TCP port 3389 in your
firewall/router, and forward it to the (non-changing) LAN IP of the WinXP
Pro box.

You will need to know the public IP address of the connection, so if you
have a dynamic IP I suggest you look at www.dyndns.com or www.no-ip.com or
similar.

Thank you Lanwench ,

That's what I was looking for: the port #. Strangely enough, in the
Microsoft Windows XP Pro for Admins book, no mention of port 3389.

It's probably written in lemon juice, for security purposes. :)
