Remote Desktop Disconnects Unexpectedly

L

Larry Stinson

One of my clients has two servers on the same network that I access
frequently using Contivity VPN and Windows XP Home Remote Desktop (Terminal
Server). My connection is DSL.

Whenever I connect to Server A, if I have a brief period of inactivity (only
about 3 minutes), I lose the connection and must reconnect. As long as I am
constantly entering keystrokes, the connection remains in tact.

But when I connect to Server B, I never experience a lost connection, even
with several minutes of inactivity.

When I brought this problem to the client's system administrator, he claims
he can log onto Server A as me and remain connected indefinately, even with
no activity (except for the server timeout setting for long periods of
inactivity). So he claims the problem is with XP Home (he uses XP Pro) or my
DSL connection (he uses cable).

My position is that if the problem were with XP Home or my DSL, I would
experience the same problems when logged onto either server. But this is
clearly not the case.

Am I missing something? I originally thought the problem may be the default
PPPoE MTU size, so I changed it in accordance with KB 283165, but the
problem persists. Does anyone have any other ideas?
