remote desktop corrupts keyboard

We have several XP pro machines in this facility. All machines can use
remote desktop with no problems. One machine, a Sony Vaio, corrupts, I
assume the keyboard translation tables of the host machine after logoff.
After using the Sony machine, XP pro SP1, to connect to another XP pro
machine and then the user logs off the remote desktop connection, the other
machine's keyboard will not output the correct charactors. P key is a
hyphen (-), the O key is a numeric key and numeric keys shift functions do
not work... Reboot does not correct this problem. The interesting bit is
that the same keys that do not work after the corrupted machine is logged on
work during the logon process to enter the admin password. These keys cease
to function after the logon process and the desktop is loaded. The only way
I have found to restore the keyboard is to use system restore to return to
the machine state before the remote desktop connection to this Sony machine.
Does anyone have an answer?

I notice from your description that the key changes you indicate are those
that are initiated when a Vaio laptop user has the num lock on. I don't
have a solution for you, but hopefully this piece of information will help
you in your hunt for one.

Kind Regards,

Perhaps I did not make that clear, but the caps lock key has nothing to do
with it.
Also msconfig was used to eliminate all unnecessary running modules except
thoses necessary to make networking and remote desktop function and the
problem still exists.

Hmm -- I'd noticed a problem with a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop which I'd
recently upgraded to XP from WinMe.

The num-lock key is turned on (light and all) after it boots. In fact, in
this case, it affects logon--unless you remember it, you can't logon
assuming your password uses the affected keys.

I hadn't thought to connect this to RD usage, but suspect that it is, in
fact related--I've been using it as an RD host after the upgrade to install
and test software.

It is possible that the tip at this site:
http://lampwww.epfl.ch/~stenman/win.html

(search on numlock) will help both "m" and myself.)
(I haven't tried it yet, myself!)
Hmm - this may not take effect until login--may work for "m" but not me.....

Have you observed the num-lock (not caps lock) indicator? This really does
fit the symptoms.

I did not read you response carefully enough, too much work, not enough
sleep. You were right. You said "num lock", I read "caps lock". I cannot
believe that this did not occur to me.
Thanks
