Special characters via remote desktop

Hi.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 running with VMware 7 on a WinXP SP3 host machine
(box1). I access this computer via another WinXP SP3 remote machine
(box2). I have a german keyboard on both box1 and box2.

When I use remote desktop from box2 to work with Ubuntu, special
characters as "[", "]", "¤", "|", ... (all via AltGr key) aren't displayed.

The mentioned keys ...
.... work on box2 using WinXP
.... work on box2 using Ubuntu
.... work on box1 using WinXP
.... work on box1 using Ubuntu
.... work on box1 using WinXP via remote desktop from box2
.... DON'T work on box1 using Ubuntu via remote desktop from box2

Are there any character set configurations I need to adapt?
