Remote Desktop Connection not working on some IP addresses

I have used Remote Desktop Connection for a number of years.

Recently (maybe around the same time as some recent patches), Remote Desktop
Connection stopped working.

I tried turning off all firewalls on both computers, but this did not solve
the problem.

However, I changed the ip address of the machine that I was trying to
connect to and then Remote Desktop Connection worked fine!?!

The problem is that I need that machine (the machine that I am connecting
to) to be a specific ip address let's say, 192.168.151.199, but Remote
Desktop Connection no longer works on that connect for some unknown reason
(it has worked on that ip address for many years), however if I change the ip
address to 192.168.151.151 then Remote Desktop Connection works fine.

Any ideas of why this is happening or how to solve it?

Use arp -a 192.168.151.199 to find the Mac address and then compare it with the remote computer Mac address. or psot back with the result.

Robert,
thanks for you help so far ...

I tried
arp -a 192.168.151.199
on the local machine and it said:
No ARP Entries Found

Interestingly, I found out that I can not even ping 192.168.151.199 (even
from the same machine or another machine) - even with the firewall turned
off, so this might be part of the problem ...

How is it possible that I can not even ping the machine?

You may have another security software running. If trying clean boot, can you ping?

Robert,

I did a safe boot (with networking) and I can ping the machine I am on (and
from other machines), but not from the remote machine (which is on a
different ip range, in this case 192.168.150.150).

If it helps, in safe mode (with networking) I could not connect with Remote
Desktop Connection even from mahcine on the same network which have been
working fine (maybe safe mode disables something).

I have now fixed some stuff in the Microsoft Live OneCare Firewall and I can
ping the machine (in non safe mode) from other machines on the same network,
but still not from the remote machine (which is on a different ip range, in
this case 192.168.150.150).

Note: from the remote machine, I can ping other machines on the network,
e.g. 192.168.151.1 and 192.168.151.254 etc

I am not aware of having any other security software installed on any of the
machines.

Any thoughts on the next steps?

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Joseph,

I have the same problem. All of a sudden I can not connect remotely,
Windows Mobile does not even detect any of my PDA\Phones (let alone sync) and
other PC's on the same network can no longer see this PC or vice versa. I
will be monitoring this thread closely to see if anyone has an answer as to
why, that after a long period of success doing all these things, it suddenly
stopped working about a week ago.

Thanks,
Jeff

This leads me to believe that it might have been something to do with the
most recent windows update which was last Tuesday.

Let's see what Robert L or anyone else can say that might help.

I am still wanting to know why I can not even ping the machine - if I can
fix this, then hopefully Remote Desktop Connection will work.

Robert: any thouhgts from my previous post and this one?

Try the windows clean boot instead of safe mode and turn off the windows firewall. Try to ping the computer self with -a like this ping -a 192.168.150.150. and then from remote computer do the same ping. Also post the result of ipconfig /all may help.

If you are working through a router, have you checked the settings on the
router for the number of assigned ip addresses it will allow and what the
range of those ip addresses will be.
