Remote desktop can browse but connection doesn't work

When using remote desktop browsing used to give the error "No servers on
workgroup". Then is set the "Advertise" bit the the registry to 1. Now both
computers CA and CB show up on MyWorkgroup. And I can browse to CA from CB
and visa versa. But when I try to connect the connection fails. If I know
the IP address then that kind of Remote Desktop connection works. Any ideas?
I am running XP Pro on both computers on a workgroup. I am on a local
network behind a router so each IP is 192.168.1.10x where the x changes.
Thanks,
Chas

What is the error message when you try to connect with Remote Desktop? Is
Remote Desktop enabled on the PCs?

Yes Remote Desktop is enabled and I can initiate RD if I use either
computer's IP address from the other. But when I open the connection window,
hit the down arrow and choose browse, then select the other computer by name
there is a long delay and then the error message :
This computer can't connect to the remote computer.
Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the
remote computer or the network administrator.

Another anomaly occures if I ping the other computer. Again the other
computer will have an IP address like 192.168.1.10x but the ping fails
because when I ping by name it pings IP address 207.69.131.10.

I wonder if this is related.
Thanks,

Chas

I appreciate the time you are taking to help me. Unfortunately we are not
there yet. The problem is permanent it does not go away after 15 min or
ever. My addresses are dyamically allocated by the router. And NetBIOS is
enabled. For my desktop maybe I could assign a static IP address (thanks for
the hint) but my laptop travels and I would rather not have to switch
settings all the time.
Thanks again,
Chass
