Remote Assistant DSL Problem

Using XP Home, I assist three friends when they have problems with their PCs. All three of us use cable access. Recently another friend upgraded to XP Home but he uses DSL. All efforts to connect result in the error message: "Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote host name could not be resolved." We can make contact using Windows Messenger but when he makes a request for remote assistance we get the same error message when I try to respond. I have researched this matter and understand I need to edit the remote request message to insert his router IP. I think I can get him to tell me his current external IP and I can edit the request before responding. What I need clarification on is do I still need to do something to his router to open port 3389? If so, how?
Thanks,
Frank

3389 need to be port forwarded in the router's continuation. I can't tell you how because I do not know the make or model of the router.

Usually the manual for the router explains how to port forward and gain access to the router. Typically http://192.168.1.1 is entered in the browser to get to the user interface of the router.
